CRE's first fully domestic 3.6 mF/4 kV DC-Link capacitors have entered mass production — supplying a project that brings 900 MW of reliable power to the heart of Guangzhou, and opening a new chapter in CRE's growth as a global power electronics supplier.

On June 6, 2026, CRE NEW ENERGY PTE. LTD. marked a major step forward in its manufacturing capabilities. The company's 3.6 mF/4 kV DC-Link capacitors, developed for the 220 kV Tianhe–Tangxia flexible DC back-to-back transmission project in Guangzhou, have completed final qualification and entered mass production. The first batch was shipped from CRE's Wuxi facility the same day. Chairman George, General Manager Yu, Executive Vice President Wang, the core R&D team, and representatives from the project's supervision authority were all present to mark the occasion.

CRE served as a key component supplier for the project, developing and manufacturing the DC-Link capacitors, delivering a solution for this grid infrastructure project.

DC-Link capacitors are critical passive components within flexible DC converter valves, required to meet exacting standards for voltage rating, capacitance precision, and long-term reliability. CRE's engineering team worked through multiple development cycles and sample qualification rounds, tackling challenges in process consistency, dielectric material selection, and batch uniformity to reach stable volume production.

Project background & community impact
The 220 kV Tianhe–Tangxia project is China's first multi-terminal flexible DC project applied within a 220 kV mega-city urban grid, and the first of its kind built within the dense core of a major Chinese city. Operated by Guangzhou Power Supply Bureau of Guangdong Power Grid Co., Ltd., the converter station sits in Tianhe District and serves the Mumian subdistrict directly — one of Guangzhou's most densely populated and commercially active zones.

When complete, the project will connect power flows from the eastern Zengcheng subgrid and the southern Guangnan subgrid into the central Mumian subgrid, delivering up to 900 MW of reliable electricity to the district. The interconnection addresses a persistent structural challenge in China's major-city grids: uneven development across zones that leaves dense urban areas exposed to supply shortfalls. For residents and businesses in central Guangzhou, the result is a more resilient power supply built to keep pace with the district's continued growth.

The project also makes the case for flexible DC technology in constrained urban environments. Its compact, multi-storey converter station design demonstrates that VSC-HVDC systems can be successfully deployed in space-constrained urban sites — establishing a replicable model for grid upgrades in other major Chinese cities.
